John L. Barry Died At Hospital Early Tuesday
John L. Barry died at the Memorial Community Hospital in Blair early Tuesday, June 12. He had been in failing health for several years.
John was a native of Blair, having been born there May 8, 1894. He was one of thirteen children born from the union of the late Michael and Mary Barry, early day residents of the area.
He served his country during World War I for two years in the European Theatre. John returned to Blair after the war and took up farming at the old family homestead 3 miles south of Blair, in 1919.
He married Edith Mueller of Blair on September 28, 1921. They continued to farm until 1932, when John went to work for the State of Nebraska Highway Department They left the farm to move to Blair in 1938. John continued to work for the State for thirty years until his retirement at age 70.
John was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church at Blair.
He is survived by his wife, Edith, and by two daughters and a son. The daughters are Mary K. Martin of Denver, Colorado and Margaret A. Gillen of Hanover Park, Illinois. The son is Robert M. Barry of Denver, Colorado.
A son John J. (Jack) preceded his father in death.
He is also survived by two brothers, Jim of Anaheim, California, and Joe of Tigard, Oregon. There are fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at the Bendorf Funeral Home in Blair. Funeral services will be held at the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church at 10 a.m., Friday, June 15.
Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Blair, Nebraska.
