Robert E. Carlson was born on December 9, 1949 in Fremont, Nebraska to Robert and Charity Faye (Ankrom) Carlson. He grew up on the family farm north of Valley, attended grade school at District #22 and graduated from Valley High School in 1968. Bob studied auto mechanics at the Universal Trade School and attended one year at UNO. At an early age Bob developed an interest in cars, tractors, and most all things mechanical. He was active in 4H, was the wood shop assistant to Mr. O’Boyle in high school and spent endless hours with his grandfather on the farm.
Bob married Amy Miller on August 3, 1974 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa and they were blessed with two children: Michael and Jennifer. Bob and Amy raised their children on the same family farm that Bob grew up on.
Bob worked at Tip Top, Valmont and Union Pacific Railroad before beginning a 27-year career at the Douglas County Engineer’s office, working as a motor grader operator and supervisor before retiring in 1999. After retirement, Bob stayed busy with the family farm, Valley Fire Department Board and many projects. He and Mike repaired and rebuilt cars and tractors of many kinds, 2-cylinder, pedal and toy. Bob was a Scout Master for many years and was proud to have 8 of his scouts obtain Eagle Scout status. He enjoyed fishing, puttering in his shop and spending time with friends. Bob could fix or build just about anything and was never afraid to learn a new skill when a project required it. Bob was an honest, thoughtful and patient man who dearly loved his family. He was an avid Husker fan, enjoyed home-grown “Carlson Beef” steaks, Jack and diet coke and dinner out at Farmer Brown’s.
Bob passed away on October 23, 2014 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska after battling cancer at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Charity Faye. Bob is survived by his wife Amy; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Kate of Elkhorn; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Brad Pfeiffer of Waverly, NE; grandchildren McKenzie and Evan Carlson; brothers Dennis of Blair and Donald of Minneapolis, MN.
