John Joseph Fitzgerald, 86

John Joseph Fitzgerald of Fort Calhoun, age 86, died on May 6, 2015, in Omaha. He was born January 30, 1929, also in Omaha.
John served in the Korean Conflict era. He then went to work with the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1960, John became a steamfitter with Local 464. He was about to receive his 55-year pin. He worked with the U.S. Postal Service. John enjoyed bowling and bowled a 300 shortly before diabetes caused him to quit.
He spent his last years serving and being served by St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann (Burch) Fitzgerald; brothers: Michael Eugene, Thomas James and Daniel; and sister Mary Ann Dillon.
He is survived by sons: Robert (Kathryn) of Kearney, William (Barbara) of Jackson, Cmdr. John (Shannon) of Penn Laird, Va.; daughters: Catherine (Scott) Metzger of Omaha, Mary Jeanne Fitzgerald of Gardner, Kan.; brother Terence Patrick (Martha) of Omaha; sisters: Sr. Sheila M. Fitzgerald, OP, of Madison, Wis., Patricia Miller of Gretna, Margaret (Jim) Townley of Omaha; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation and vigil service were held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10, with vigil service at 7 p.m., all at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 11, also at St. John's.
He was interred at Fort Calhoun Cemetery with military honors conducted by Fort Calhoun American Legion Post 348.
Memorials are to be directed by the Fitzgerald family.
Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
