FRED COMPTON DEATH VICTIM APRIL 9th
SHERIFF OF COUNTY FOR TWO TERMS, SUFFERS FOR YEARS
A. A. Compton died suddenly Tuesday, April 9th, of a heart attack. He had been in poor health for years and while his death was expected yet its suddenness came as a shock to the family and community.
He was born in Cuming City, October 20, 1867 to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Compton and grew to manhood in this county. His entire life, with the exception of ten years spent in Burt County, was passed in this county.
On February 22, 1899 he was married to Miss Anna Kull and to this union four children were born: Mrs. John Reeh of Herman; William A., and Paul P., of Blair and Clyde C. of Los Angeles, California; these with his wife and eight grandchildren survive as do also a number of brothers and sisters, A. P. and J. M. and Charles Compton of Blair and Karl Compton of Weeping Water, Nebraska, and Mrs. Mary McManigal, Mrs. Harry Ervey, and Mrs. Ben Peck of Blair and Mrs. Jess McManigal of Walthill and Mrs. Fannie Lund of Riverton, Wyoming.
Deceased was at one time active in politics and served two terms as sheriff. He was also an active member of the Modern Woodman Lodge.
Funeral services are being held at the Episcopal Church this (Thursday) afternoon with Rev. Gramley of Gibbons, former pastor, former pastor here, in charge and interment will be made in the Blair Cemetery. Thus closes the life of another old settler.
A patient sufferer for years and yet making the best of everything, he was a good husband and father and he will be missed by his wide circle of friends.

A. A. Compton, 63, a local businessman and former sheriff of Washington County died Tuesday morning as his home, 500 West Washington Street. He had been in failing health for several years, bedfast recently.
The body was removed to the Campbell Mortuary. Funeral services are being held at 2 p.m. today at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Officiating will be Rev. L. W. Gramly of Gibbon, former pastor of the Blair church. Pallbearers will be Mr. Lippincott, E. M. Beaty, Peter M. Tyson, Cork Allen, Scott Allen and Ed Grimm. Interment will follow in the Blair Cemetery.
Son of John and Nancy Compton, well-known pioneers of this vicinity, Mr. Compton was born October 20, 1876 at Cuming City just north of Blair. He spent all his life in Washington County with the exception of ten years in Burt County, as a farmer when he was a young man.
Before serving as sheriff Mr. Compton operated a livery barn, which he had purchased from W. G. Harrison. In more recent years he was an automobile agent and for the past several years he had operated the Compton Liquor Store.
Mr. Compton served as sheriff for a five-year period from 1911 to 1916.
He married February 22, 1889 in Blair to Miss Anna Kull of this city. She survives as do three sons, Paul and William Compton of Blair and Clyde Compton of Los Angeles and a daughter, Mrs. John Reeh of Herman. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, four brothers, Charles, A. P. and John N. Compton all of Blair, and Carl Compton of Weeping Water and he has five sisters, Mrs. Mary McManigal, Mrs. Jess McManigal, Mrs. Harry Ervey, and Mrs. Ben Peck, all of Blair and Mrs. Fannie Lund of Riverton, Wyoming. Two sisters precede Mr. Compton in dead, one in infancy, the other Mrs. Maude Lemon several years ago.
Mr. Compton had been a member of the Modern Woodmen of America for a number of years.

Funeral services for A. A. Compton, 63 year old Blairite, were conducted at St. Mary’s Episcopal church Thursday afternoon. A former pastor, Rev. Luther Gramley of Gibbons, Nebraska was in charge of the services and subsequent burial in Blair cemetery. Pallbearers were Clark Allen, Scott Allen, M. R. Lippincott, Ed Grimm, Peter Tyson and Mark Beaty.
Among those attending the rites were Mr. and Mrs, Clark Stricklett, Mrs. Vera Ehinger, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Nelson, and Gus Kull, of Omaha; Mrs. Jess McManigal and daughter of Walthill; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Compton and family of Weeping Water; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Teght and family of Fremont; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wilder and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Peck of Craig; Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Peck of Tekamah.
