HARRY K. HAYES SUICIDES

Monday morning, Harry K. Hayes, a painter, aged about 39, who has made his home in Blair for the past four or five years, was found dead about noon by Mrs. Chas. Antrim, who had missed him about the place during the forenoon.

Mr. Hayes had roomed at this place for several months and for the past few weeks had been sleeping in a small building detached from the house which had been fitted up with bedroom equipment and contained a small gas stove. Deceased was in the Antrim home during Sunday evening and left for his room about 10 o’clock, which was the last seen of him alive. As he was a late sleeper when not at work, his landlady did not call him until noon, and on opening the door made the horrible discovery that he had committed self destruction.

The sheriff and other officials promptly responded to her call and found that his death was premeditated, having attached a tube to the gas stove with the other end in his mouth, and then drawn a pillow slip over his head and fastened it close around his neck with a string. He had been dead some hours when found.

The body was removed to Campbell’s undertaking parlors and Sheriff Mehrens endeavored to locate relatives or friends of former years, and a woman at Nelson, Nebr., was the only one to be traced.

Mr. Hayes is said by those who knew him, to have been a man of more than ordinary intelligence, a Bible student and a great reader. At one time he was worth considerable money, but through misplaced confidence his money left him. Brooding over domestic trouble is assigned by his friends as being responsible for his rash act.

Brief funeral services were held at Campbell’s mortuary Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, Rev. A. E. Marsh, rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, conducting the rites, and all that was mortal of the unfortunate man was laid away in the Blair Cemetery, while the rain dropped on his casket.
