Betty L. Hernes, 74, of Blair, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at the Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, S.D. Memorial services were held at First Lutheran Church in Blair on Monday, Aug. 17.

Betty L. Bates was born Sept. 6, 1934, in Huron, S.D., to Lee and Rita (South) Bates. She graduated from Huron High School in 1952 and enrolled in the Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls. She graduated from the nursing school in 1955 and received her RN that summer.

On Aug. 19, 1956, she was married to Arvin R. Hernes, who was a student at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. She worked at Sioux Valley Hospital and as an office nurse in Sioux Falls until they moved to Rapid City in 1958.

After moving to Blair in 1961, she worked as a nurse at the Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, and later as the campus nurse at Dana College.

Mrs. Hernes was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Blair.

She is survived by her husband Arvin; two children, Karla Broman of Blair and Kevin and Jeana Hernes of Arlington, and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Richard Bates; and infant son Alfred Lee Hernes.

Memorials may be directed to the Dana College Danish Archives or to First Lutheran Church of Blair.
