Jorgine Sofie Nielsen
Mrs. Jorgine Sofie Nielsen passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marion Stricklett on Saturday, January 20, 1940 following a serious illness. She was 76 years, 7 months and 21 days old at the time of her death.
Mrs. Nielsen was born at Hjorring, Denmark, on April 29, 1863. In 1882 she was married to Christen S. Nielsen, the wedding taking place in Denmark, and in the same year the couple came to America. They lived for a time in Council Bluffs and later moved to Kennard; in 1893 they returned to their native land for a four year term of residence.
Upon their return to Washington County in 1897, Mr. Nielsen established a business in Blair which he continued until his retirement in 1917. Mr. Nielsen passed away in 1938, and since that time Mrs. Nielsen had resided at the Stricklett home.
Surviving Mrs. Nielsen are six daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Amelia) Hoier, Mrs. Chris (Marie) Gutschow, Mrs. Henry (Sophie) Petersen, Mrs. Thorvald (Elizabeth) Jorgensen, Mrs. Marion (Anna) Stricklett and Mrs. Carl (Jorgine N) Graverholdt, all of Blair; one son, Chris E. Nielsen, of Canton, South Dakota; twenty-five great-grandchildren, and twenty-six grandchildren.
Services were held at the Marion Stricklett home on north Walker Avenue at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Harold C. Jorgensen, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, in charge.
Note: The Vig notes at the Danish American Archives state that Jorgine had 22 children, 21 girls and 1 boy.
