Jespersen, Nels 11/8/1925

11 Nov., 1925 - The Pilot

Nels Jespersen was born in Stor Arden, Denmark, December 16, 1853. Came to america and settled in Avoca, Iowa in 1881. Later located just east of Elk City in 1883. February 14 in 1883 he was married to Bargette Jensen. In 1884 they moved to Pleasant View farm 7 miles south of Blair. On this farm many happy years were spent. Here they reared a family of 9 children. In the year of 1904 death first entered this family home and took a daughter, Christina, aged 20 years. In May 1913 the faithful wife and mother was called; a few weeks later of the same year a son, Nels, was laid to rest by the side of the mother and sister. After these deaths the home was broken. Mr. Jespersen was a good business man helping his large family locate on farms of their own, and had the interest of his children always at heart. He was a good father and husband, and his friends and neighbors all loved and respected him. Last spring he started farming on his farm just a mile south of Blair. He and his son, Otto, were in partnership. His health began failing early in the summer but he did not want his family to know of his serious condition. Three weeks ago he suffered a paralytic stroke. He was then brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. C. Petersen and a trained nurse cared for him. All that loved ones could do was done for him and during his three weeks illness many old friends and neighbors called on him and he recognized them all and as usual had a cheerful word and handshake for all. The end was coming near, and he was slowly failing and last Sunday morning at 3:10 a.m. he passed away. Deceased leaves to mourn his loss three daughters: Mrs. P. C. Petersen, Mrs. Carl R. Hansen of this vicinity and Mrs. Lars Jensen of Marcus, Iowa and four sons, Lars Jespersen who is farming the old home farm and Otto who farms the Hemingford, Nebr., and Jens farms a mile south of Blair, Jesper of Des Moines, Iowa. Also two brothers, Jesper of Denver, Colorado and Louis of Escanaba, Michigan, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. A short service will be held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. C. Petersen at 12 o’clock Wednesday and at the Blair Danish Lutheran church at 2 o’lock. Interment was made in the Blair cemetery by the side of his wife and children. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family in the loss of a dear father.
