OLDEST MEMBER OF FIRE DEPARTMENT DIED WEDNESDAY
Basil George, An Early Settler, Dies At Age Of 87 Years
Basil George, a resident of Blair for the past 67 years, passed away at his home in this city on Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock. About four weeks ago the deceased fell and broke his arm and the shock proved too much for him, and he gradually grew weaker and weaker until the end came.
Mr. George came to Blair the same year that the town was founded, and has followed various lines of business. He was the oldest fireman living, and was, it is said, the only charter member of the company.
He was born in Anderson County, Indiana, and had he lived until May 3rd, he would have reached his 88th year. He was married in 1871 to Miss Catherine Armstrong, and to them two daughters were born, one passing away in 1907 and later the wife in 1927. One daughter, Mrs. Fern Antrim, survives him and grieves deeply her great loss. Also two nieces, Mrs. Wm. Armstrong of Fremont and Mrs. Cal Gilland of Madison, Nebr.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Bendorf Funeral Home, and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery.
Note:Different spelling of name, Bazil, Basil and Bazel.
