MRS. CARPENTER, 96, DIED HERE MON., JUNE 24

Early Settler. Came To County In 1870. Homesteaded On York Creek

Mrs. Esther Carpenter, a resident of this county for the past seventy six years, died at her home on East Colfax Street on Monday, June 24th, at 11:30 a.m.

Deceased was born in Morrow County, Ohio on May 31, 1850. When she was four years of age she came with her parents to Lucas County, Iowa where she grew to womanhood. She was married to William Carpenter on December 27, 1870, and immediately moved to Washington County, Nebraska where Mr. Carpenter had previously homesteaded on a piece of land in Grant Township.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, five of whom survive. The survivors are Mrs. Ida B. Hindley of Blair and Alice and Minnie at home; Moses Carpenter of Oakland, California; and Henry of Appleton City, Missouri. Besides these, she leaves twenty two grandchildren, a number of great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the Methodist church with Rev. Sidney L. McCaig, pastor of the church officiating, and interment is to be made in the Rose Hill cemetery.

To have lived in one community for seventy six years and have known the material changes as Mrs. Carpenter has known them is an education that can be acquired in no other manner. It is indeed a great loss to the community and to her many friends to have her go to her last rest. Old friends, old scenes have been her life and although nature has made her call, her memory will remain sacred to her relatives and friends.
