20 May, 1901 - The Pilot - Peter Nilsen not Nelson

Peter Nelson of Orum is dead. The news was received by his neighbors last Wednesday morning with the deepest regret for Mr. Nelson has lived in that neighborhood for thirty years or more and had none but friends about him. He was one of the pioneers to the county and has done much toward its upbuilding. The cause of his death is a mystery and probably always will be. On Wednesday Mr. Nelson went into the pasture to fix up the foundation or cover rather. His son-in-law was working in the adjoining field and noticed Mr. Nelson several times, but finally he missed him, and his continued absence caused alarm and the boy went over to the well and found unmistakable evidence that Mr. Nelson had not left the well. He hurried to the house and in company with Mr. Nelson’s daughter returned to the well and with a long pole raised the body from the bottom. The well is sixteen feet and contains about fourteen feet of water. How Mr. Nelson happened to fall into the well is a mystery and will probably remain one. He may have been overcome or may have made a misstep. The funeral was held Friday and was the largest attended of any funeral ever held in that vicinity. His friends and neighbors came from miles around to pay their last respects to one who had always been their friend and one of the best neighbors that ever settled in a community. The immediate members of the family consist of a wife and several daughters, his only son having been killed by a horse some twelve years ago. The Pilot joins with the many friends and neighbors of the family in extending sympathy in this their dark hour of bereavement.
