Mary Ellen (Lindholm) Hill Fitch, age 97 of Blair, peacefully passed away October 17, 2024. Celebration of Life will be held Monday, November 4, 2024 at PassageWay Church, Blair at 10:30 AM with a luncheon to follow at the church.

Mary Ellen (Lindholm) Hill Fitch was born October 7, 1927 in Audubon, Iowa to Holger and Minnie (Andersen) Lindholm. Mary attended Dana College in Blair before transferring to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln to earn her teaching certificate. Following graduation, she began teaching first grade; she taught at several schools with her longest tenure from Gretna Elementary, retiring in 1983, after 30 plus years of teaching.

Children were her passion, and she always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. Mary also had a passion for music and was a gifted pianist that enjoyed playing at church, for friends and family. She was an avid card player, especially Pinochle, and developed several lifelong friendships through card games.

At age 90, Mary started riding an exercise bike and rarely missed a day. Mary was always on the go and believed in a healthy lifestyle and was a large part of making her apartment facility smoke free.

With her family, she enjoyed playing games, especially Yahtzee. She was known as the “Yahtzee Queen.” Mary was a positive person known for her smile, sense of humor and caring heart. She was a sports fan and huge Iowa Hawkeye fan, knowing stats for football and basketball. Mary had a very strong faith and through every trial and tribulation sought the Lord as her anchor. She was resilient and steadfast in her faith.

She is survived by her children: Cynthia (Neal) Tranel of MT, James Jr. (Terese) Hill of Fremont, NE, Karen (Scott) Lamberson of FL, Nancy Shultz, of FL, Linda Mayuiers of FL, Maria (Jeff) Bledsoe of Blair, NE; 23 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Daty Fitch and James Hill Sr., siblings: Joe Lindholm and Gwen (Lindholm) Christensen.
