Fryman helped guide Blair schools at a pivotal time

Joseph William Fryman IV is being remembered for his strong leadership in the growth of Blair’s public school system.

Fryman died on Dec. 8 at age 76. He was a local farmer and had retired from a 30-year career at Blair’s H&R Block. Inaddition to his 20 years on the board of education for Blair Community Schools, Fryman also worked with the Washington County ASCS County Committee and the Riverview Grange.

“Joe was progressive, didn’t speak unless he had something to say that added to the conversation, and occasionally say ‘Well, I am going to play the devil’s advocate,’ which was ironic because Joe was as far away from the devil as any man I have ever known,” said Former Blair Mayor Richard Hansen.

LeeRoy Swanson, who served with Fryman on the Board of Education, said he was “just excellent.”

“Very, very dependable. Always had valuable input and he always did his homework, he was always prepared. His decisions were made with the kids and the staff at the forefront,“ Swanson said.

During his 20 years as a school board member duringthe ’80s and ’90s, Fryman was among those who oversaw the construction of the Arbor Park Elementary School and Otte Blair Middle School.

“It was enjoyable and challenging. When we were met with challenges, we had a lot of support from the community,” Swanson said.

Born on Dec. 20, 1947, in Blair,Fryman grew up on the family farm north of Blair. He was a graduate of Blair High School and Dana College, and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. In 1971, Fryman married Tamara Christensen. They have three children: Erin Ring, Laura Jackson, and Matthew Fryman.

“Every student, every parent and every grandparent should be grateful for the fact that Joe Fryman — through his wisdom, common sense and leadership skills — was on the school board,” Hansen said.

Joe and Tammy lived and farmed on the family farm which has been in the Fryman family for 150 years. They raised corn and soybeans, as well as hogs and cattle in earlier years. Joe was a member of First Lutheran Church since 1971, serving on the church council as council president, as a Sunday School teacher and as a confirmation mentor. Joe and Tammy now attend Reach Church and Christ Lutheran Church. He also recently served as a Stephens Minister.

Joe enjoyed traveling and planning many adventures and experiences for others. These included family trips and organizing bus trips with the Nebraska State Grange members. He also loved traveling internationally with his wife Tammy and wintering the last few years in Arizona. Many of the family's favorite memories come from the adventures Joe planned including: road tripping from Nebraska to California, taking the train to Montana, and spending a Christmas in Hawaii.
