PIONEER GONE

Fritz Stranghoener died at his home near the Brown Creek church last Sunday evening following an illness of several months. Mr. Stranghoener was one of the early pioneer settlers of Washington county, coming here in 1869 from Germany, where he was born at Hanford, Westphalen 75 years ago.

He served in the Danish-Austrian war of 1854 to1865.

He was married to Miss Hannah Laaker before he left Germany, and brought his bride to Washington County. Mrs. Stranghoener, however, died about five years ago.

Mr. Stranghoener, who had acquired large land holdings through his years of industry, had made his home in the same neighborhood for nearly half a century. He was one of the founders of the Brown Creek church and had always been a liberal supporter and active in the work of the institution.

Suffering with an attack of rheumatism for several months, his condition gradually grew worse, his advanced age adding to his infirmities. Two weeks ago he was stricken with dropsy.

Surviving him are two sons, Herman and August, and three daughters, Mrs. Henry Scheer, Mrs. Fred Ahlemeyer and Mrs. Henry Stork, all residents of Washington county.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the house at 12 o’clock and at 1:30pm at the church. A large body of mourners was in attendance.
