Lori Jan Nielsen, age 69 of Blair, passed away February 22, 2025, at Astoria Senior Living. Following Lori's request no services will be held at this time.
Lori was born March 10, 1955, in Onawa, Iowa, the eldest child of Howard and Hope (Hansen) Nielsen. She lived with her family in Onawa until the fall of 1959 when the family moved to the farm south of Onawa. The farm was a great place to grow up. The family enjoyed annual summer vacations in the West, especially to Grand Lake, Colorado. Lori was an active member of 4-H. Lori was proud to be an honor roll student and graduated from West Monona High School in 1973.
Lori attended Dana College, where she was active in several campus organizations and was selected for membership in Alpha Chi honor society. During the January 1976 Interim, she toured Europe. Lori graduated in 1977 with a B.A. degree, majoring in English Education with a minor in Danish.
Over the next several years she taught at Tekamah High School and later Omaha Public Schools, before attending Iowa State earning her Masters Degree in English in 1984. She then taught at Iowa State for a year and then later Des Moines Area Community College until accepting a position at Dana College in 1992 as the Director of the Learning Center.
Lori continued to enjoy annual summer vacations with her parents and friends, including trips to Europe. She also enjoyed spending time with friends, reading, and researching family history.
Lori is survived by her brothers; Kim Nielsen and Lance Nielsen, and nephew Andrew Nielsen.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law Christi (Mead) Nielsen.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association in Lori's name.
