County Supt. Clarence Vig Dies While on Eastern Trip
Autopsy Attributed Sudden Death to Food Poisoning
A.Clarence Vig, County Superintendent of schools, died suddenly Tuesday morning at Pulaski, Virginia, the apparent victim of food poisioning. An autopsy performed Wednesday by Pulaski County Medical examiner Dr. Perry Hyde, was reported to have determined that death was due to heart failure, but this was not yet confirmed as The Enterprise went to press Wednesday evening.
The news came as a distinct shock to the entire county for both Mr. and Mrs. Vig are lifelong residents of Blair and have made many hundreds of friends here.
The former Blair Mayor and Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post had been County Superintendent since January, 1955 and was enjoying the vacation preparatory to the opening of the second year the first of September.
Mr. and Mrs. Vig had left Blair July 30th, going to Westport, Maine where they attended the wedding of James O. Anderson, Jr., of Blair. Following the wedding they had started a trip through the eastern and southern states, expecting to return to Blair next Sunday, August 19th.
They had stopped at Pulaski, Virginia for an evening meal Monday night and a short time later Mr. Vig became violently ill. Death, which followed quickly, was attributed to food poisoning.
Mr Vig, who was 49, was born July 21, 1907 at Luck, Wisconsin, the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. P. S. Vig. The family moved to Blair a short time later where the elder Mr. Vig played a prominent part in shaping the early history of Dana College.
The younger Mr. Vig attended Dana College where he starred in athletics and later served in the Navy during World War II.
He was Mayor of Blair from May 1950 until May 1952 and was in the real estate and abstracting business during and after his term as Mayor.
Mr. Vig was married to Miss Mary Anderson June 29, 1946. The couple has one child, a son, Ronnie, who is seven years old.
James Anderson, Blair real estate man, who is a brother of Mrs. Vig left immediately for Virginia by plane, to be with his sister and to drive them home.
Information reaching Blair late Wednesday afternoon revealed that the body will arrive in Omaha shortly after midnight Friday morning.
