ALICE M. RAABE, 90

Alice M. Raabe, 90, of Blair, died June 13, 2008, at Crowell Home in Blair.

Services were June 17 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. Interment was in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Omaha.

Alice Mae Vom Weg was born July 11, 1917, in Omaha to Carl and Vera (Sires) VomWeg. She grew up at 44th and Pierce streets, and 83rd and Izard streets (in the Acres).

She was baptized on April 5, 1942, and joined West Benson Presbyterian Church. Later, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington and Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. She attended Beals Grade School and graduated valedictorian from Underwood High School in 1935.

She worked as a seamstress, as a waitress at Peony Park, and did bookkeeping for Paul Davie & Sons and Bunz Implement Co.

On Sept. 21, 1940, she married Roy Raabe in Papillion. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together.

They lived on various farms in northwest Omaha before buying their farm south of Washington in 1969. They retired to a house in Elkhorn in 1986. Due to failing health, they moved to an assisted living facility and later to Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, where Mrs. Raabe was residing at the time of her death.

She was a hardworking farm wife and mother. She always raised chickens and had an egg route for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Raabe always had a big garden and orchard and Mrs. Raabe canned and preserved in abundance. She was active in church as a Sunday School teacher and deacon, and participated in many women’s groups. Some of her hobbies and interests were needlework, flowers, sewing, reading, writing letters, and collecting bells and spoons. One of her favorite memories was of her trip to Europe in 1979 with one of her good friends. Up until the end of her life, she enjoyed her Sunday drives with her son, Leroy, and her visits with her family.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Nancy and Harlan Custard of Bennington; Leroy and Joyce Raabe of Omaha; Gloria and Walt Sass of Kennard; and Pam and John Schwenck of Sun City, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; two sisters, LaFern Pedersen and Wilma “Billie” Thompson; and one brother, Bruce Vom Weg.

Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elklhorn was in charge of arrangements.
