James J. Schmit, 59
James J. Schmit, 59, of Kennard died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair.
Visitation with the family will start at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, with a 6 p.m. Rosary at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home.
James J. “Jim” Schmit was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Omaha to Al and Betty (Scholtes) Schmit. He was a 1968 graduate of Murdock High School.
After high school, he was drafted and served his country in Viet Nam.
He married Rebecca Anderson on Dec. 8, 1973, in Logan, Iowa.
Mr. Schmit was a self-employed computer programmer.
He was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, and was active in Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster in Arlington for many years. He was a regular at the Washington County Recycling Center in Blair, and helped with Habitat for Humanity. Building furniture was his favorite hobby and he enjoyed making things for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Becky; daughters and son-in-law, Heather and Amanda of Omaha, Sarah of Kennard, Rachel and Kamron Blocker of Carson, Iowa; son and daughter-in-law, James and Kristin Schmit, also of Carson; five grandchildren: Cheyenne and Wyatt Schmit and Bailey, Reiley and Makenna Blocker; father, Al Schmit of Fort Calhoun; brother and sister-in-law, Janet and Ron Bergmann of Gretna, Judy and Erv Poore of Woodbine, Iowa, Jeanne and Gary Hall of Blair, Joanne and Randy Mueller of Columbus, and Joyce and Mike Smith, also of Fort Calhoun.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty, and three brothers.
