HEMMING PETERSEN

Hemming Petersen was born on Feb. 22, 1846 in Moen, Denmark and died on Nov. 27, 1928 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Petersen of this county at the age of eighty-two years, nine months and five days.

He was married to Sophia Nielsen on Nov. 6, 1874 and the following spring they emigrated to America, coming directly to Washington county where they settled and made their home. To them eight children were born: Kristina Christensen, deceased; Peter X. Petersen of Lyons, Nebr.; Jens L. Petersen of Blair, Mrs. Mary Andersen of Herman; Lars P. Petersen of Blair, Mrs. Anna Brodersen of Fremont, Mrs. Kate Petersen and Mrs. Carrie Petersen of Blair.

In 1924 Mr. and Mrs. Petersen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their farm where they had resided for forty-six years and the children and grand-children gathered to do honor and to show their love and respect for them. It was a red letter day which will always be remembered by the family.

On August 10, 1928 the wife passed away, and the aged husband although tenderly loved and cared for by the children, yet he never recovered from the shock. He made his home with his children going where he chose and when he chose but he was waiting patiently for the end, which came when he was at the home of his daughter.

Mr. Petersen was well known to the writer. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, always a conscientious Christian gentleman living up to the highest of ideals and he and his wife were held in the highest esteem by all those who knew him and when the last sad rites were held on last Friday afternoon, friends and neighbors filled the Rose Hill church where the ceremony was held and followed the remains to the cemetery a silent token of their love and respect for him.

Besides the seven surviving children, he leaves twenty-four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and one brother, Rasmus Petersen, who is now the only surviving member of a family of eight.
